Personal data

We’ll look after any personal information you choose to share with us, and will not pass it on to third parties (unless legally required to do so or otherwise stated below). No spam, we promise. We will only collect and store the minimum amount of personal information needed to deliver our services, and we will retain the information for the minimum necessary time. Our use of personal data is overseen by our Data Protection Officer.

Feedback on articles sent to us via the feedback forms on the site may be anonymous, but you can also supply your name – and email address if you want us to be able to contact you. You may also provide your name optionally on our contact form. This data is looked after by us (and our hosting company) in the UK. Please note that using these forms will NOT sign you up to our mailing list – please use the Join mailing list form on any page if you want to receive periodic updates from us. Our mailing list requires explicit opt in, and you can easily opt out at any time.

Subscriptions to our mailing list require your email address only. Our mailing list is serviced by a third party, MailChimp, and we therefore need to pass your email address to them. You can see their privacy policy here. They state that: “… Distribution Lists are stored on a secure MailChimp server … We do not, under any circumstances, sell your Distribution Lists … Only authorized employees have access to view Distribution Lists”.

Donations (Support us) are optional and much appreciated, and are processed by PayPal. Please refer to their privacy policy for your particular location. If you choose to make a donation, your name and email address are shared with us by PayPal.

We request that you do not put personal information into message or comments fields, as it then becomes more difficult to protect.

Your IP address may be stored by our webserver in its logs and by our site analytics tools. We do not use this information to identify you personally.

Note that settings in your browser may be used to control use of cookies if desired.

A cookie is a small file stored on your device when you visit a website. We may use them to:

  • Remember your preferences
  • Tailor our site to your interests

There are various types of cookie:

First party cookies

These are set by the site you’re using, and only that site can read them. Also, a site may use a separate company to record and assess site usage – we use Google – this separate company will use their own cookie to do this.

Third party cookies

These are set by someone other than the owner of the site you’re using. Some pages may also contain content from other sites, which may set their own cookies. Also, if you share a link to a page, the service you share it on (e.g. Twitter) may set a cookie on your browser.

We have no control over third party cookies.

Advertising cookies

Some sites use advertising providers to show you targeted adverts when you visit. Such providers may also be able to track your browsing across different sites.

We don’t set advertising cookies on our site.

Session cookies

These are stored while you’re browsing. They get deleted when you close your browser.

Persistent cookies

These are saved on your device and don’t get deleted when you close your browser.

We may use persistent cookies when we need to know who you are for more than one browsing session. For example, we may use them to remember your preferences for the next time you visit.
